The New Watch Face Format in WearOS 6

WearOS 6 introduces a new, more power-efficient watch face format called Watch Face Format v4. This change affects both the battery life of your watch and which watch faces are compatible.

A More Power-Efficient Design​

The new watch face format uses a declarative XML structure that is significantly more power-efficient than previous formats. Watch faces built with this format render elements more efficiently and update complications only when necessary rather than constantly refreshing.

  • Lower Battery Drain: Watch faces use less CPU and GPU resources while displaying.

  • Smoother Animations: Despite using less power, animations and transitions are smoother.

  • Better Always-On Display: AOD mode consumes less battery with the new format.

Third-Party Watch Faces​

Third-party watch faces must meet Google's quality standards to be compatible with WearOS 6. This ensures all watch faces are power-efficient and provide a good user experience.

  • Existing Watch Faces: Previously installed watch faces continue to work but won't benefit from all new features.

  • Updated Watch Faces: Developers are updating their watch faces to support the new format with enhanced features.

  • New Watch Faces: Watch faces designed for WearOS 6 take full advantage of animated transitions and interactive complications.

For Developers​

Watch face creators have access to new capabilities including animated transitions between states, richer complication interactions, and better integration with Material 3 dynamic theming.
