How to Use Google Assistant on WearOS

Google Assistant on your WearOS watch lets you control smart home devices, send messages, get information, and manage tasks using voice commands. Setup takes a few minutes, and once configured, Assistant responds to Hey Google or button presses.

Setting Up Google Assistant

Enable voice activation to use Assistant hands-free.

  • Initial Setup: During watch setup, follow prompts to enable Google Assistant. If skipped, open Settings Google Assistant to configure later.

  • Voice Training: Train Hey Google detection by following on-screen prompts to speak sample phrases. This improves recognition accuracy for your voice specifically.

  • Language Settings: Ensure your phone and watch use the same language. Mismatched language settings cause Assistant to fail or respond incorrectly.

  • Account Sync: Verify your Google account is signed in on both devices. Assistant needs account access to provide personalized responses.

Voice Commands

Assistant handles various tasks directly from your wrist.

  • Communication: Say Send a message to [contact] to compose texts or Call [contact name] to dial. Assistant can read incoming messages aloud and accept voice replies.

  • Information Queries: Ask What's the weather like? for forecasts, How many steps have I taken today? for fitness stats, or general knowledge questions.

  • Device Control: Say Set a timer for 10 minutes, Set an alarm for 7 AM, or Remind me to call mom at 3 PM. These work offline once created.

  • Smart Home: Control connected devices with commands like Turn on the living room lights, Set thermostat to 72 degrees, or Lock the front door.

  • Navigation: Say Navigate to [destination] for directions or Where's the nearest coffee shop? for location searches. Navigation hands off to your phone for detailed routing.

Troubleshooting Assistant Issues

Common problems and their solutions.

  • Voice Recognition Fails: Retrain the voice model in your phone's Google app settings. Ensure you're in a quiet environment and the microphone isn't blocked by cases or debris.

  • Slow Responses: Check your internet connection via WiFi or phone Bluetooth. Restart Google services by force-stopping the app and reopening. Clear the Assistant app cache if problems persist.

  • Assistant Not Available: Some regions and languages have limited Google Assistant support. Verify availability for your location in Google's support documentation.

  • Hey Google Not Responding: Battery saver modes often disable voice detection. Check that Hey Google detection is enabled in Settings Google Assistant.

Gemini Transition

Google is transitioning from Assistant to Gemini on newer watches.

  • WearOS 5+ Devices: Gemini replaces Google Assistant as the default AI assistant on Galaxy Watch 7 and newer models.

  • Feature Differences: Gemini offers more conversational AI capabilities but currently lacks some Assistant features like smart home routines.

  • Availability: The transition is gradual and varies by device and region. Check your watch's settings to see which assistant is active.
