How to Manage Apps on WearOS

Managing apps on your WearOS watch involves installing from the Play Store, removing unused apps to free storage, and optimizing performance. Proper app management keeps your watch running smoothly and extends battery life.

Installing Apps

WearOS watches access the Google Play Store directly, though installation methods vary by situation.

  • From Watch Play Store: Open the Play Store app on your watch, browse or search for apps, and tap Install. The app downloads directly to your watch when connected to WiFi or through your phone's connection.

  • From Phone Play Store: Open Play Store on your phone, search for an app, and select your watch from the device dropdown. The app installs remotely while your watch stays connected.

  • Sideloading Apps: Enable developer mode in Settings System About Build number (tap 7 times), then use ADB commands or apps like Wear Installer 2 to install APK files not available on the Play Store.

Uninstalling Apps

Removing unused apps frees storage space and can improve performance.

  • From Watch App List: Navigate to your apps screen, long-press the app icon you want to remove, and drag it to the Uninstall option that appears. Confirm when prompted.

  • From Phone (Samsung): Open Galaxy Wearable Watch settings Apps, select the app you want to remove, and tap Uninstall. This method works well for batch uninstalls.

  • From Phone (Pixel/Other): Open the Watch companion app, navigate to app management, and remove apps from the list. Not all companion apps offer this feature.

Performance Optimization

Keep your watch running efficiently with regular maintenance.

  • Storage Management: Check available space in Settings Storage. Aim to keep at least 500MB free for system operations and app updates. Remove apps you haven't used in months.

  • Battery Optimization: Close unused apps from the recent apps screen by swiping them away. Limit background activity for apps that don't need constant updates.

  • Keep Apps Updated: Enable automatic updates in the Play Store settings or manually check for updates weekly. Updates often include performance improvements and bug fixes.

Troubleshooting App Issues

Common app problems usually resolve with basic troubleshooting steps.

  • Installation Failures: Check that you have sufficient storage space and a stable internet connection. Restart your watch and try again. Some apps require specific WearOS versions.

  • App Crashes or Freezing: Force-close the problematic app by holding the power button and selecting Restart. If issues persist, uninstall and reinstall the app.

  • Compatibility Problems: Verify the app supports your WearOS version in the Play Store listing. Some manufacturers restrict certain apps on their devices.
