How to Set Up Gemini on Your Smartwatch

Getting Gemini running on your WearOS watch requires configuration on both your phone and watch. Follow these steps to enable voice assistant features.

Requirements

Verify you meet these requirements before starting setup.

  • Phone: Android phone with the Gemini app installed and signed in to your Google account.

  • Watch: WearOS 4 or later. Check in Settings System About Versions on your watch.

  • Supported Brands: Pixel Watch, Galaxy Watch 4 and newer, OnePlus Watch 2, or compatible watches from OPPO and Xiaomi.

  • Region: Gemini must be available in your region. Not all countries have access yet.

  • Same Account: Your watch and phone must use the same Google account.

Step 1: Set Up Gemini on Your Phone

Configure Gemini as your default assistant on your Android phone first.

  • Install Gemini: Download the Gemini app from the Play Store if you haven't already.

  • Set as Default: Open Gemini and follow prompts to make it your default assistant, replacing Google Assistant.

  • Sign In: Ensure you're signed into the same Google account you use on your watch.

  • Enable Extensions: Go to Gemini profile Extensions to enable Google Workspace and other integrations you want on your watch.

Step 2: Install Gemini on Your Watch

Get the Gemini app on your WearOS device.

  • Check Pre-Installed: Some newer watches come with Gemini pre-installed. Check your app list first.

  • Install from Play Store: On your watch, open Play Store search Gemini Install.

  • Gradual Rollout: If Gemini doesn't appear in search results, it may not be available in your region yet. Check back periodically.

Step 3: Configure Voice Activation

Set up how you'll trigger Gemini on your watch.

  • Button Press: Go to Settings Buttons Press and hold select Digital Assistant or Gemini.

  • Hey Google: Go to Settings Google Digital assistant enable Hey Google for voice activation.

  • Complication: Long press your watch face Customize add Gemini complication for tap access.

  • Tile: Long press watch face swipe to tiles Add tile select Gemini.

Step 4: Test Your Setup

Verify Gemini is working correctly with simple commands.

  • Basic Test: Say Hey Google, set a timer for 1 minute or press and hold your assistant button.

  • Information: Say What's the weather today to test internet connectivity and response.

  • Health Data: Say How many steps have I taken to verify fitness app integration.

  • If It Fails: Check that your phone and watch are connected via Bluetooth and both have internet access.

Troubleshooting Setup

Common issues and how to resolve them.

  • Gemini Not Appearing: Ensure your watch runs WearOS 4 or later. Older versions don't support Gemini.

  • Commands Not Working: Verify Gemini is set as your default assistant on your phone, not Google Assistant.

  • Features Missing: Enable specific extensions in your phone's Gemini app. The watch inherits these permissions.

  • Connection Issues: Restart both your phone and watch. Re-pair if necessary through the Watch app on your phone.
