Gemini Can't See Shared or Family Calendars

When asking Gemini about upcoming events on your Pixel Watch or WearOS device, it may miss events from shared or family calendars. This is a confirmed limitation of Gemini, not a bug with your watch.

Why This Happens

Gemini can only access your primary calendar. Unlike Google Assistant, which supported multiple calendars from multiple Google accounts, Gemini is restricted to one calendar.

  • Primary Calendar Only: Gemini sees events on your default calendar exclusively
  • No Shared Calendars: Family, work, or shared calendars are invisible to Gemini
  • No Secondary Accounts: Other Google account calendars don't appear
  • Regression from Assistant: This is a significant step backward from Google Assistant capabilities

Impact on Daily Use

This limitation affects common scenarios:

  • Family Calendars: Events on shared family calendars won't appear when you ask What's on my schedule today
  • Work Calendars: Secondary work Google accounts are inaccessible
  • Created Events: Events created via Gemini only go to your primary calendar
  • Manual Duplication: You must manually copy important events to your primary calendar

Workaround 1: Copy Events to Primary Calendar

For critical shared events, manually duplicate them.

  1. Open Google Calendar on your phone
  2. Find the event on your shared calendar
  3. Copy the event to your primary calendar
  4. Gemini will now see and announce this event

Workaround 2: Subscribe Instead of Share

Subscribed calendars may work differently than shared calendars.

  1. Ask the calendar owner to provide a subscription link
  2. In Google Calendar Settings Add calendar From URL
  3. Add the subscription link
  4. Test if Gemini can see these events (results vary)

Workaround 3: Use Google Calendar App Directly

Bypass Gemini entirely for calendar queries.

  1. Open the Google Calendar app on your watch
  2. All calendars (shared, subscribed, secondary accounts) appear here
  3. Scroll to see upcoming events from all sources
  4. Use this when you need complete calendar visibility

Workaround 4: Continue Using Google Assistant

If calendar access is critical, avoid migrating to Gemini.

  1. In phone settings, set Google Assistant as default assistant
  2. Assistant still supports multiple calendars
  3. Note: Google is phasing out Assistant, so this is temporary

Future Outlook

Google has acknowledged this limitation but hasn't provided a timeline for fixes. The forced migration from Google Assistant to Gemini means many users are losing multi-calendar functionality with no immediate solution.

  • No Fix Timeline: Google hasn't announced when multi-calendar support will arrive
  • Feature Regression: Users are downgrading from Assistant to less capable Gemini
  • Feedback Recommended: Submit feedback through the Gemini app to prioritize this feature
