Gemini Keeps Resetting to Setup Screen

If Gemini repeatedly returns to the setup screen on your Galaxy Watch or WearOS device, this is a known bug affecting many users. The issue often occurs after updates or when switching from Google Assistant.

Why This Happens

Gemini may get stuck in a setup loop due to corrupted voice model data, incomplete migration from Google Assistant, or sync issues between your watch and phone.

  • Voice Model Corruption: The Hey Google voice detection may need retraining after migration.
  • Cache Conflicts: Old Google Assistant data can conflict with new Gemini settings.
  • Account Sync Issues: Your Google account may not be properly synced on the watch.
  • Icon Bug: Some users report the Assistant icon refuses to change to Gemini icon even after setup completion.

Solution 1: Retrain Voice Model

Retraining voice detection often resolves the setup loop.

  1. On your watch, go to Settings Google Assistant Voice Match
  2. Select Retrain voice model
  3. Follow the prompts to say Hey Google several times
  4. Restart your watch after completion

Solution 2: Clear Gemini App Cache

Clearing cached data removes corrupted settings that cause the loop.

On your watch:

  1. Go to Settings Apps Gemini
  2. Select Storage Clear cache
  3. Repeat for the Google app

On your phone:

  1. Open Settings Apps Gemini
  2. Select Storage Clear cache and Clear data
  3. Restart both devices

Solution 3: Re-login to Google Account

Account sync issues can cause persistent setup loops.

  1. On your watch, go to Settings Google Accounts
  2. Select your Google account and choose Remove account
  3. Restart your watch
  4. Go back to Settings Google Accounts and add your account again
  5. Open Gemini and complete setup

Solution 4: Clear Watch Cache Partition

This clears system-level cache without losing personal data.

  1. Power off your watch completely
  2. Press and hold Home + Back buttons until Samsung logo appears
  3. Navigate to Recovery mode using the buttons
  4. Select Wipe cache partition
  5. Restart and test Gemini

Solution 5: Factory Reset (Last Resort)

If nothing else works, a factory reset properly restores Gemini with the correct icon.

  1. Back up your watch data via Galaxy Wearable app
  2. On watch, go to Settings General Reset
  3. Select Factory reset and confirm
  4. Set up watch fresh and configure Gemini during initial setup

Prevention Tips

  • Keep Apps Updated: Regularly update Gemini, Google, and Galaxy Wearable apps
  • Complete Setup Fully: Don't interrupt the initial Gemini setup process
  • Stable Connection: Ensure strong Bluetooth and WiFi during setup
