How to Measure Body Composition on Galaxy Watch 5 Pro

The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro can measure body composition using the BioActive sensor—the same BIA (bioelectrical impedance) technology found in dedicated body composition scales.

What It Measures

MetricDescription
Body fat %Percentage of body that's fat
Skeletal muscleMuscle mass in kg/lbs
Body water %Hydration percentage
BMIBody mass index calculation
BMRBasal metabolic rate (calories)

How to Measure

  1. Open Samsung Health on the watch
  2. Tap Body composition
  3. Enter your current weight if prompted
  4. Place middle and ring fingers of opposite hand on Home and Back buttons
  5. Hold still for 15 seconds
  6. View results when measurement completes

Best Conditions for Accuracy

Before measuring:

  • Barefoot (skin must contact buttons)
  • Empty bladder
  • Not immediately after eating or exercise
  • Same time of day (morning recommended)
  • Normally hydrated

During measurement:

  • Sit or stand comfortably
  • Keep arm relaxed
  • Maintain firm contact with buttons
  • Breathe normally, don't move

Understanding Results

Body Fat Percentage:

  • Men: under 15% athletic, 15-20% fit, 20-25% average
  • Women: under 23% athletic, 23-30% fit, 30-35% average

Accuracy: Expect ±3-5% compared to DEXA scans. Best used for tracking trends over time rather than absolute values.

Track Progress Over Time

  • Measure weekly, not daily (normal fluctuations occur)
  • Compare month-to-month trends
  • Use Samsung Health to view historical data and charts
  • Don't stress individual measurements—patterns matter more

Limitations

Not suitable for:

  • Pregnant women
  • Pacemaker users
  • Anyone with implanted medical devices
  • Under age 18

Keep in mind:

  • Screening tool, not medical diagnosis
  • Hydration significantly affects results
  • Different devices give different readings—use one consistently
