How Waterproof Is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4?

The Galaxy Watch 4 has 5ATM water resistance plus IP68 rating, making it safe for swimming, showering, and everyday water exposure. It includes dedicated swim tracking modes with automatic Water Lock.

Water Resistance Ratings

The watch carries two complementary certifications for water and dust protection.

  • 5ATM: Withstands pressure equivalent to 50 meters (165 feet) of static water. Suitable for swimming, showering, and shallow water activities but not scuba diving or high-pressure water sports.

  • IP68: Complete dust protection (rating 6) and water immersion beyond 1 meter (rating 8). The watch can be submerged up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes.

Safe Water Activities

The watch handles most everyday water exposure and recreational swimming.

  • Swimming: Pool swimming, ocean swimming (rinse afterward), water aerobics, and shallow diving within 5ATM limits

  • Daily Activities: Showering (warm water), bathing, rain, washing hands, washing dishes

  • Water Sports: Kayaking, paddleboarding, surfing (without high-impact water entry)

What to Avoid

Certain conditions can damage the watch or exceed its water resistance rating.

  • Not Recommended: Scuba diving, high diving, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, power washers, and water skiing

  • Temperature Limits: Avoid hot water above 113°F (45°C), steam exposure, and boiling water. High temperatures accelerate seal degradation.

Using Water Lock

Water Lock disables the touchscreen during water activities and ejects water from the speaker afterward.

  1. Swipe down to quick settings and tap the water drop icon
  2. The screen locks and displays the Water Lock symbol
  3. After swimming, rotate the crown or press the button
  4. The speaker plays a tone to eject water
  5. Dry the watch before charging

Water Lock also enables automatically when you start a swim workout in Samsung Health.

After-Water Care

Proper maintenance preserves water resistance over time.

  • Rinse After Swimming: Always rinse with fresh water after ocean or pool exposure. Salt and chlorine can degrade seals gradually.

  • Dry Before Charging: The charging contacts are exposed. Ensure the watch is completely dry before placing on the charger.

  • Watch for Warning Signs: Foggy display, moisture under the screen, or muffled speaker after water exposure may indicate compromised seals.
