How to Track Sleep on Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

The Galaxy Watch 4 automatically tracks your sleep when you wear it to bed—no buttons to press or modes to enable. Samsung Health detects when you fall asleep and analyzes your sleep stages, duration, and quality throughout the night.

What Sleep Tracking Measures

The watch monitors several metrics while you sleep.

  • Sleep Stages: Time spent in Awake, REM, Light, and Deep sleep phases throughout the night

  • Sleep Score: A 0-100 quality rating based on duration, efficiency, and sleep stage balance

  • Heart Rate: Continuous monitoring with lowest/highest rates and variability

  • Blood Oxygen (Optional): SpO2 monitoring to detect potential breathing irregularities (uses extra battery)

Setting Up Sleep Tracking

Enable automatic detection in Samsung Health settings.

  1. Open Samsung Health on your watch
  2. Tap Settings (gear icon)
  3. Scroll to Sleep
  4. Enable Detect sleep automatically
  5. Set your sleep goal and notification preferences

For snore detection, open Samsung Health on your phone and enable snoring detection in Sleep settings. Place your phone on the nightstand—it uses the phone's microphone to detect snoring since the watch microphone isn't suitable for this.

Viewing Your Sleep Data

Check your results in the morning on the watch or phone.

  • On Watch: Swipe to the Samsung Health tile and tap Sleep for a quick summary. Open the Samsung Health app for a more detailed breakdown with sleep stage graphs.

  • On Phone (Detailed Analysis): Open Samsung Health and tap the Sleep card. View sleep stage timeline, heart rate graphs, blood oxygen levels, snore detection results, and weekly/monthly trends.

Best Practices for Accurate Tracking

Consistent conditions help the watch track your sleep accurately.

  • Watch Fit: Wear snug but comfortable—not too tight (restricts blood flow) or too loose (sensors lose contact)

  • Band Choice: Use a soft silicone or fabric band for sleep comfort. Metal bands can be uncomfortable when lying down.

  • Battery: Charge to at least 50% before bed. Sleep tracking uses 8-12% battery overnight (10-15% on the 40mm model).

  • Consistent Schedule: Going to bed and waking at similar times helps the watch recognize your sleep patterns more accurately.

Bedtime Mode

Enable Bedtime Mode for undisturbed sleep and battery savings.

Navigate to Settings Display Bedtime mode and configure a schedule. This mode automatically enables Do Not Disturb, dims the display, and disables Always-On Display while still allowing alarms to sound.
