How to Check Heart Rate on Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

The Galaxy Watch 4 tracks heart rate continuously using the optical sensor on the watch back.

On-Demand Heart Rate Check

  • Quick Measurement: From watch face, swipe right to tiles, find the Heart rate tile, and tap it. The watch measures for 10-15 seconds and displays your BPM (beats per minute).

  • Through Samsung Health: Open Samsung Health app, tap the Heart rate card, then tap Measure. Wait 10-15 seconds and view your result with heart rate zones.

Continuous Heart Rate Monitoring

  • Enable Auto-Tracking: Open Samsung Health app Settings Heart rate Enable "Continuous" measurement. The watch now tracks heart rate all day.

  • Battery Impact: Continuous monitoring uses 5-8% extra battery daily.

  • When to Disable: To save battery, enable only during workouts, or switch to "manual" for occasional checks.

Understanding Heart Rate Zones

  • Resting: 40-60 BPM (sleeping/relaxing)
  • Fat Burn: 50-70% of max HR
  • Cardio: 70-85% of max HR
  • Peak: 85-95% of max HR
  • Maximum: 220 minus your age (estimated)

During workouts, Samsung Health shows your current zone so you can track intensity and optimize training effectiveness.

Viewing Heart Rate History

  • On Watch: Open Samsung Health Heart rate to view today's heart rate graph with highs, lows, and current reading.

  • On Phone (Detailed): Open Samsung Health app Heart rate for daily, weekly, and monthly graphs showing resting heart rate trends, average heart rate, and heart rate variability (HRV).

Heart Rate Accuracy

  • For Best Accuracy: Wear the watch snug (not too tight), position on top of wrist, clean sensor regularly, avoid tattoos covering sensor, and stay still during measurement.

  • Accuracy Expectations: Generally accurate within ±5 BPM, best during rest, may vary during intense movement. Note this is not a medical-grade device.

Troubleshooting

  • Heart Rate Won't Measure: Clean sensor on watch back, wear watch tighter (snug fit), ensure sensor is touching skin, dry both skin and sensor if wet, and avoid wrist tattoos if possible.

  • Inaccurate Readings: Stay still during measurement, warm up wrist (cold affects accuracy), ensure good skin contact, and try repositioning the watch.
